Our Baptism Policy Basics:
Baptism is a public ritual, normally conducted during a Sunday worship service. We do not conduct private baptisms.
At every baptism, the Castlegar United Church congregation commits to support the person/s being baptized in their understanding of, and participation in, the Christian community.
Any person of any age may be baptized.
The language used at baptism reflects the agreement between the Presbyterian, Lutheran, United, Roman Catholic, and Anglican Churches. The phrase, “in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” is used so that baptism can be recognized in each of these denominations. Alternative names for God may accompany this trinitarian formula, but not replace it.
Water is used to symbolize birth into a new life in Christ Jesus. A three-fold sprinkling of water is normal; however other possibilities, such as immersion, are available.
Some Other Guiding Principles:
Baptism, as a sacrament, is an outward sign and celebration of God’s unconditional love. Persons being baptized and their families are invited to respond to God’s unconditional love and may choose how to respond. At baptism the congregation commits to welcome those being baptized and to share with them God’s message of unconditional love. Families and persons being baptized demonstrate their commitment and responsibility to baptism by exploring their faith and by the statements they make at the time of the baptism service.
Baptism is not necessary to be welcomed into God’s “kingdom.”
Baptism often signifies the beginning of a faith journey. We expect families and communities to provide the nurture and support for children to journey actively in the Christian family. Adults being baptized become full members. Full membership in Castlegar United Church includes responsibilities and obligations, which are explained to adults being baptized and recognized by the governing body.
